With so many wonderful beaches on offer in Spain, selecting the top five was difficult. But we’ve tried to include something for everyone – those seeking quiet seclusion, those who prefer the tourist experience, and those who want to go where the locals go.  So let’s get started: presenting our selection for top five beaches in Spain.

5: Es Trenc, Majorca – a wind surfer’s dream

If you are looking for a place to get away from the tourist crowd and enjoy some wind surfing, go where the locals go – to Es Trenc.  Located on the south coast of Majorca, Es Trenc is part of a wetland reserve and the only beach on the island that remains undeveloped.  Because of this, amenities are few at Es Trenc, but there is a café bar at the beach where you can hire umbrellas.  Nearby is Can Bril, a five-bedroom villa with pool that accommodates two families.  (For those looking for wind surfing with a bit more nightlife and beach action, Tarifa beach on Andalusia offers more amenities, as well as more tourist crowds.)

4: Benicassim, Costa Azahar – for music lovers

Benicassim is mainland Spain’s top music beach and home to the annual Benicassim festival, with plenty of cheap hotels, resorts, and package holiday offers available, especially around festival time (14 – 17 July 2011).  Once a pirate stronghold, Benicassim is a great beach for sunning, swimming, and camping.

3: Playa de Illetes, Formentera – A couple’s beach

Playa de Illetes is located on the northern tip of the smallest of the Balearic Islands.  A perfect beach for couples, by day Playa de Illetes offers a perfect beach day excursion.  Enjoy a morning swim in the clear waters.  At lunch, take a break with a delicious bowl of Formentera lobster stew and get some exercise as you cycle around the island.  And then, of an evening after the ferry has taken the crowds away, bask in romantic solitude on the white sandy beach, perhaps even enjoying a nude swim with your lover.

2: La Barrosa, Cadiz – everyone’s beach

Often voted the best beach in Spain by the Spanish themselves, La Barrosa features fine white sand stretching over five miles.  Perfect for groups of all ages and interests, there are areas buzzing with activity as well as those offering up a quiet afternoon in the sun.

1: La Concha, San Sebastian – the best of the city beaches

It is said that La Concha is not only the best city beach in Spain, but the best in all of Europe.  Located 13 miles from the French border, at La Concha you will find the up-and-coming and already-there crowds sitting in hip bars, wearing designer clothes, enjoying the latest in trendy cocktails.

As well as being a popular beach for tourists, La Concha is also favoured by the locals on both sides of the border, with plenty of places to enjoy some pintxos – the local name for tapas.  Mount Igueldo is also nearby, offering spectacular views from the top.

    Great, I love the article.

Let´s face it, one of the main reasons people come to spain is to sit on the beach. There could be the most amazing things to see and do just 5km down the road but no, “I´m here to relax.”

So if you love beaches and unlike the majority want to find the ideal spot – away from the crowd, fantastic scenery, low cost etc then I recomend Galicia. The best beaches aestecically speaking are here.

My top five would be all be located on the infamously names “Coast of Death” Traba – Laxe, Carnota – Cee, Las Dunas – Ribervia, Baron – Porto do Son and anywhere on the O´Grove coast in Pontevedra.

Suggest a high season visit due to the weather, but even then some of the beaches I mention above would be empty.
