Language is biggest gift, which mankind has received from god. It is one of those features which distinguishes a man from other animals. There are millions of languages which are spoken all over the world, every country has its own language and at the same time there are diverse languages which are spoken in different regions of the same country. One of the most renowned languages in the whole world is Spanish. It is also spoken in almost all the South American countries other than Spain itself.
The Spanish language is said to be derived from the vulgar Latin, with some assistance of few words from Basque and Arabic. Spanish is found similar to many languages as there a large number of words in Spanish which are quote similar to the words of other languages. This phenomenon can also be seen in Roman languages; however, after the great fall of the Roman Empire in the fourth century AD, the cultural contact got heavily reduced with the Roman Empire.
The standard language of Spain is known as Castilian, as it is quite an old language it is also known as Old Spanish. From the 16th century it has been called as the modern Spanish but during the 17th century due to the literary accomplishments of that era, it came be known as Classical Spanish. The Castilian Spanish developed and originated at the time when the decline of the Roman Empire took place. The honor and prestige of the Old Spanish or Castile was propagated by the Castilian heroes.
The history of the Spanish language is vast and glorious as the world most known dynasties have contributed to its development. There have been a lot of controversies regarding the influences on the Spanish language, it is said that the Spanish language is highly influenced by Arabic. It is also quote evident that the Spanish language does have some Germanic touch to it. Even though the Germanic languages most probably affected the development of the Castilian, many Spanish words which have the Germanic origin are so vary common in day to day Spanish language. The words which refer to cardinal directions i.e. north, south, east, west, have been picked up from Germanic words, after the Atlantic sailors got in contact.
Spain has also had a history with the Muslims, Spain was unexpectedly invaded by the powerful Islamic forces in 711, because of which the Arabic language was introduced in the peninsula. Because of this reason, Spanish language from time to time adopted and borrowed a lot of words from Arabic.
The language spoken in the Americas is however very different from Castilian, it is more of a blend of Portuguese and Spanish. Most of the slang’s in the Spanish language has been introduce from Columbia, Cuba and Mexico. The reason for the Portuguese touch in the language is that the official language of Brazil is Portuguese. There is no end to the history of languages as there are a millions of sources which still have not been discovered.
