Intro
It’s a well known fact that Spain is the land of fiestas and the Spanish people leave no stone unturned when it comes to celebrating these fiestas. This tradition is not only restricted to the cities but in every sole village or town, there is always a festival of some kind which gets all the people out on the roads and streets with their known one’s. The biggest and the most known festivals of Spain itself are the massive fireworks of Valencia, the bullrunning of Pamplona, the made up fights of Moros y Cristianos of Alcoy and the huge Feria de Abril of the famous city of Seville. In the whole of Andalucia you will mostly come across bullfighting, music and wine festivals like Flamenco. In small towns and villages you will usually come across strange fiestas like the Snail festival of Lleida, the Paella festival in Sueca and a Seafood festival in O’Grove.
Carnival in Spain
Out of all the wild Spanish festivals which happen throughout the year, there is nothing crazier than the Carnival celebrations of Spain. This Carnival takes place in the end of the month of February. The air is filled with the feeling of wild parties when the country becomes the host to Europe’s best and biggest Carnival festivals. There are a lot of stories related to the origin of the Carnival. It is believed that the word Carnival has been derived from the words of “Farewell to the Flesh”. Some believers say that it is derived from the Roman solstice festival, The Saturnalia, where participants concentrate on only dancing and drinking.
Moros y Cristianos
Around 150 different kinds of festivals of Moros y Cristianos are celebrated in Spain every year. The most popular of them takes place in Alcoy, in the province of Aliacante which celebrates the Battle of Alcoy of 1275, which depicts the battle where St George helped defeat the Moorish forces lead by Al Azraq. According to every Alcoyano, this fiesta is the greatest of all the other fiestas celebrated in the whole of Spain. The festival takes place from the 21st of April to the 24th of April. Moros y Cristianos is a serious affair for the people of Spain. The preparations for the fiesta takes place all around the year, which happens to be only 4 years long. A total of 28 armies take part in the mock battles.
San Fermin Running of the Bulls
The famous festival of San Fermin or the Bullrunning of Pamplona, as it is known outside Spain, begins on the 6th of July every year at midday. It begins with the “Chupinazo” which happens on the balcony of the Casa Consistorial, situated in Pamplona. Thousands of people collect together and wait for the official announcement of the mayor that the Fiesta has begun. A launched rocket marks the beginning of the Fiesta and then the party begins. The history of the Pamplona Bullrunning can be trace back to the 13th century where it seems that the events of the Fiesta used to take place in the month of October.
