Charming and tranquil by day and cool and sultry by night, San Sebastian or Donostia in Basque, is everything Bilbao is not and it is next to impossible not to fall in love with it.
Summer at the beach is the best of times and Playa de la Concha is as good as any city beach in all of Europe. Lest we forget Playa de Gros full of surfers and flirtatious sun worshippers. As you watch the sunset with drink in hand, you realize love is in the air and it is the place, San Sebastian you love.
For breath taking views walk to Monte Urgull at the end of the town and see the statue of Christ surrounded by castle walls. Monte Igueldo dominates your view to the west and from the summit the views take your breath away as you see the crescent shaped Bahia de la Concha and the sprawling mountains and coastline. An old world railway will take you to the top.
The beaches are alive all summer long with thousands of tanned bodies sprawled in the sand. Only 700 metres from the beach and accessible by boats every 30 minutes, Isla de Santa Clara is a great place to visit. Swimming at Playa de Concha is usually always safe while at Playa Gros the surf is stronger and it is more for surfers than swimmers.
Food here is the focus like in any Spanish town or city. There are local versions of tapas that are smaller than other places, yet just as good if not better and here they are called pintxo. Many places specialize in seafood, but here it is all available.
Nightlife descends on the area when the sun sets and Parte Vieja is said to have more bars per square metre than anywhere else on earth. So, that should give you an indication of how good the nightlife is in the San Sebastian area.
