The town of Pamplona in Northern Spain is best known for its famous bull running events that take place every year as part of the San Fermin festival. The famous author Ernest Hemingway was overawed by this spectacle and frequently wrote about it.
The famous Bullring of Plaza de Toros is at the far side of the town, near to the picturesque Arga River. There have been bullfights held here regularly since 1893, and although in recent years there have been calls to end bullfighting, it is as much a part of Spanish culture as Picasso.
While this is no doubt an adrenalin pumping experience, there is plenty to be enjoyed in Pamplona for those who want an altogether more relaxing trip. This town is steeped in Spanish culture and the stunning backdrop of the Navarra Mountains are teeming with Spanish Folklore. For those who enjoy fine dining, the many restaurants offer gourmet food and a vast array of quality wines to accompany it.
Pamplona dates from medieval times and the walls are from the 16th century, yet it has adapted itself perfectly to the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. It has embraced urbanisation with open arms yet has managed to preserve its integrity and culture. The wide avenues, which are lined by modern parklands, are the backbone of the town and lead to the ancient monuments of the area.
Tourists can stroll around the charming town squares and wall towers and explore the baroques which line the relaxing and serene Tereja Park. The town hall houses an ancient document that dates from 1120 known as Fuero. There are remains of epochs from the Neolithic to Gothic periods stored in an ancient hospital that has been converted into a museum. This also houses Moorish caskets and several very valuable paintings.
There are monuments of famous personalities situated in Taconera Park alongside a neoclassical fountain called the ‘Fountain of Neptune’. This was built and designed by the Luis Paret. There are several Gothic cathedrals in the town of Pamplona, the oldest dating from 1397. There are so many relics and old structures in the town that those with historical interests would have to make several trips to see them all.
