lagomera 300x225 La Gomera, the Canary Islands’ second smallest islandThe dormant volcano of La Gomera, the Canary Islands’ second smallest island, makes for a great place for magnificent vistas and pleasurable walks through impressive valleys and majestic mountains. La Gomera is much less a tourist trap than other places in the Canary Islands and makes for a tranquil holiday.

Even though La Gomera is a small island it is full of history. Known as Christopher Columbus’ last stop before his crossing of the Atlantic you can still visit the house he stayed at while on the Island.

What also makes the island so well known is the Silbo, the ingenious and unique whistling language that is used by those from the island in order to communicate across the valleys or barrancos as they are known on the island. Visit today and you can still hear it.

The Garajonay National Park a World Heritage Site which is a dormant volcano is La Gomera’s largest tourist attraction. The mountains remain wreathed in clouds the majority of the time and the hillsides are covered with tropical forests and heather.

The area with all the clouds and green vegetation reminds one of a movie set from The Lord of the Rings. Effervescent mist and mysterious clouds contribute to the parks lushness and beautiful vegetation and constantly hide the highest peaks of the national park.

There are many marked routes to hike, jog or even cycle and the restaurant, in log-cabin style, at the Laguna Grando has an array of great dishes. Some of the best beaches in all of the Canary Islands can be found on Gomera. San Sebastian, the island’s capital, has black sand beaches that may be rockier than others but the crystalline waters make for excellent snorkeling, scuba diving and other water sports.

All along the shoreline of the island there are many deserted beaches that you can enjoy a perfect afternoon of sun on the perfect island holiday. There are very few hotels on La Gomera with most in San Sebastian and in the harbor. The Hotel Jardin Tecian located on the top of a cliff with cottages surrounded in tropical gardens offers breathtaking vistas and a place for the perfect relaxing time.
