huelva 300x179 Huelva from Spain top the New WorldHuelva is not only significant to the history of Europe but also to that of the Americas. This city and the villages that surround it were pivotal in the voyage of one of the world’s greatest discoverers, Christopher Columbus.

Columbus stayed in Huelva, prayed in its churches, and selected his crew from the area, all before his great voyage. There are a number of monuments that commemorate its heritage one is dedicated to no other than Cristobal Colon the founder of the New World.

Huelva is at the mouth of two rivers with two mountain ranges, the Morena and Aracena overlooking the city in the background. Rich deposits in minerals attracted early Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans and then came the British to buy all the copper mines.

Besides the wealth that was brought to Huelva via the mines agriculture, fishing and tourism have provided substantially as well. Combine that with the influences of the Moors and the Christians and you can get a good idea of the rich history that Huelva has.

Huelva is home to some of the most beautiful unspoiled beaches in all of Spain. Summers are hot and the winters are very mild with temperatures averaging from 16-18ºC, depending where you are – the mountains or the coast. The coastline line of 120km is marked with white sand beaches and fishing ports as well as Donana National Park.

There is a myriad of flora and fauna including the Spanish Imperial Eagle and other birds of prey. Partridge, geese, egrets, ducks and storks litter the different habitats and trees. The area is full of wildlife from those that soar to lofty heights to those close to earth the area is teeming with life all trying to coexist.

It is not too much of a surprise to know that sports in the area tend to enjoy all the natural beauty of Huelva and its surroundings. Cycling and rambling are enjoyed quite frequently here. If there is a want or need to participate in other sports then visit Punta Umbria located in the same province. There you will find kite surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, sailing and of course golf can be enjoyed in many different well-kept courses.

The best way to arrive by plane would be to fly into Seville. It is the second largest airport in Spain behind just Malaga. You can then take the RENFE train from Seville to Huelva. That is about an hour and a half long trip.
