denia 300x225 Denia some of the best of everythingThe Costa Blanca on Spain’s Mediterranean coast is one of the world’s most inviting destinations for anyone seeking sun, sand and sea with great food and unlimited nightlife thrown in.  There are a lot of options for a traveller, all offering ‘the best’ of this and that, but Denia seems to have some of the best of everything.

Situated in the northern region of the Costa Blanca, midway between Valencia and Alicante, Denia shares the region’s blessings of a glorious climate, dazzling beaches and plenty of opportunity for the pursuit of pleasure.  However, in some regards Denia outshines its neighbours.  Lying right at the foot of Montgo mountain, it claims some spectacular scenery including the view from atop the 753m peak.

Denia claims more festivals than any other town in Spain; there is something exciting and colourful going on no matter what time of year you happen to visit.  Just as a sample, the Bous a la Mar, which takes place in July, involves bulls chasing crazy humans through the streets and into the sea.  The humans leap off a seawall into the Med; the bulls generally don’t.

If you’re a golfer, Denia is definitely the place to go.  There are five 18-hole courses in the immediate area or within less than an hour’s drive, designed by such world class golfers as Steve Ballesteros and Jose Olazabal.  In fact there is so much to see and do within easy driving distance that renting a car is a very good idea; during the peak summer season, be sure to book one in advance.  If you’d rather not drive the trains are an excellent option, running at frequent intervals to major points of interest.

If you’d rather stay on or near the water, that’s okay too; you won’t lack for entertainment.  You will find about 20km of beautiful and relatively un-crowded beaches and coves, all with consistent blue flag ratings, perfectly suited to sunning and swimming, or more adventurous activities like scuba diving, snorkelling and sailing.

The port at Denia offers more than 1,000 moorings for boats and yachts of every size, and is the chief departure point for the sixty mile trip to the Balearic Islands.  A sleek new super-fast ferry will get you to Ibiza in under two hours, or you could take a leisurely cruise along the coast to other lavish resorts such as Benidorm and Calpe.

Denia also boasts dozens of excellent restaurants and hundreds of tapas bars offering what some claim is the best and most diverse food in the world; no matter where you are in town or on the beach, you’re not far from a delightful culinary experience.
