Forming an archipelago in the coastal area of Pontevedra, the Cíes Islands is located at the mouth of Ria de Vigo. Located in the municipality area of Vigo, Cíes Islands are a part of San Francisco de Afora. The island was declared part of the national reserve in 1980 and around the same period was also included in the National Land Marine Park. Cíes Islands comprise of three main islands named San Martino, do Faro and Monteagudo. All the three islands are known for their distinguished aroma and beauty. San Martino is separated by the Freud a Porta Straight from Santoulo coast. On the other hand Monteagudo is separated by the northern canal from Morrazo peninsula. The Do Faro Island is the only island which is linked to the northern island with the 1,200 m long sand beach known as Rodas.

One of the most interesting parts of the island is the western side which is full of water during the high tide periods. The tourists can witness the sea flowing and filling in the lagoon lying in between the beach and the rocks. The tourists can also enjoy climbing the highest peak of the island lying in this part which is known as Alto das Cíes. All the parts of the islands were formed during the tertiary period which were once peaks of the coastal mountains now partially under the sea. Almost all the islands are fully made up of granite rocks which make them more interesting among the tourists. While the western side of the island is full of rough surface forming several vertical cliffs, the eastern side is less steep and id covered by bushes and woods. The woods are the main source for the formation of dunes and beaches as they protect the beach from speedy Atlantic winds.

Tourism: The Rodas beach located at Do Faro Island has been declared one of the most beautiful beaches of the world. During summer seasons the tourists can easily reach the beach using boats which constantly leave from ports like Cangas, Baiona and Vigo. The beach is popularly also known as the nudist beach. The island also provides the tourists with camping opportunities but prior permission is required from the Vigo port. Some of the other places which cater to the needs of the tourists include supermarket, visitor center, restaurant and several small shops. The tourists have to take care of not messing up the place as it has no waste bins. The tourists have to carry back the waste produced by them to the mainland.

Some of the most popularly found species out there in the island include jara, torvisco, espassaguera, retama and tojo. On the other hand the woodland has undergone several alterations with some of the autochthonous species of plants been extinct. Nearly one fourth of the island has been recently reforested with plants like eucalyptus and pine trees. Some of the other factors which restrict growth of trees are the strong salty winds blowing right from the sea.
