caple 300x225 Calpe beaches and historyCalpe is one of the most popular destinations on Spain’s Costa Blanca, in the Alicante region, set between Benidorm and Moraira.

Calpe has a wealth of history. Prehistoric remains were found there, when the Moors conquered Spain, they built a castle there, the town has been ransacked by pirates, and it was also a fishing village, before it became a  popular holiday destination – evidence of the fishing trade can be seen at the Queen’s Baths (los Baños de la Reina).

The old town is the best place to experience the history. The mudéjar church towers and walls, dating from the 8th and 13th centuries, reflect the time of the Moors when Muslims conquered Spain. Then, there are the Museo Arqueológico and the Museo Festor, south of the Peñon de Ifach, Calpe’s famous peak, one of the most important landmarks of the Costa Blanca. There is also La Peça, an 18th century tower and Calpe’s catholic church, in a Gothic style.

If all of that history is just a bit too heavy-going for you and you just want to get away from it all, you can always laze on a sandy beach or two. In fact, Calpe has two, family friendly and safe, with lifeguards. Benissa and Moraira, to the north, are definitely worth a visit for their coves. Check out local bird-life and wildlife at the local salt lakes.

As you would expect, Calpe has great seafood restaurants, well-stocked with locally-caught fish. Join people from Calpe and all around in revelling in bars and nightclubs, particularly during the summer months, from June to September.

Calpe combines the best of all worlds, looking for all the world like a package destination but offering a whole lot more besides and the weather is always good.
