The Basque region is in the Pyrenees Mountains, a region that divides Spain and France. This region is home to a small ethnic community with a mix of Spanish and French influences.

Bilbao, the sixth largest city in Spain, is in this Basque region and has the biggest port. It is the main industrial centre in the north of Spain. It is famous for the Guggenheim Museum and the Euskalduna Palace that attracts holidaymakers and businessmen alike.

The Guggenheim is an architectural masterpiece which houses numerous avant-garde and contemporary works of art. The Guggenheim has a very unique design. The Euskalduna Palace, on the other hand, features concerts and musicals for tourists to enjoy.

Bilbao is also famous for its Basque cuisine, which is one of the best in Spain. People can enjoy sumptuous feasts in the region’s leading restaurants. This is a place with the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants that offer the must-try bacalau and tapas. People can also enjoy the best of Bilbao’s freshest catch, delectable cheeses, fruits, and crisp vegetables from the Riverside Market.

As Bilbao is set on the winding River Nervión, a visual feast is set on Puente Colgante, a transporter bridge built in 1893 that spans the river and offers a breathtaking view.

Casco Viejo is a haven for tourists who love drinking in the cultures of the city. It is filled with old mansions and gothic churches that retain the memory of the Basque culture. For arts and crafts, the best place to be is in Zubiarte, a street that offers a vast array of pottery, crystal, leather, and the ubiquitous Basque berets.

This city is truly a mix of the old and the new.

If you’re planning to spend your holiday in Bilbao, and you’re from outside the EU, please keep in mind that you could need a tourist visa.
